The Portland Hospital for Women & Children Children's Brochure

The Portland Hospital is the UK’s largest private children’s hospital, treating over 40,000 children from newborns up to the age of 18 every year.

The Children’s Unit is open at all times for elective and urgent admissions, and its onsite state-of-the-art facilities and expertise mean all children can be diagnosed and treated from complex cases and the acutely unwell, to those needing routine outpatient appointments.

There is a fast-track referral service which enables children to have a same day or next day appointment with a general paediatrician if necessary.
The hospital offers the full breadth of children’s services, ensuring a fully-integrated healthcare approach: from day case ENT surgery to multi-specialist craniofacial and neurosurgery.

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit offers back-up support for all paediatric specialties, as well as treatment for critically ill children transferred from other UK or international hospitals.

Having the best diagnostic and imaging technology enables the hospital’s paediatric specialists to diagnose medical conditions quickly and accurately. This means treatment can begin earlier and patients can get better sooner which helps to reduce the inevitable stress on the family. The Diagnostic and Imaging department offers a wide range of examinations, in a child-friendly environment, with the option of anaesthetised MRI and CT scans should children find it difficult to stay completely still for the duration of the scan.

The Children’s Unit is a warm, clean, welcoming and homely environment, designed to help make children feel at ease, reduce their anxiety and aid their recovery. The hospital aims for every child and their family to feel respected, supported, involved and properly cared for.

All children are given their own private room with a TV and en-suite facilities. There is free wireless internet access throughout the hospital and a playroom full of interactive computers, books and toys. A special children’s menu is available. Parents are encouraged to stay overnight in their child’s room.
