Why Opt for Midwife-Led Care?

Are you trying to decide on what kind of care to pick for your pregnancy journey and the big day itself?

Here at Private Pregnancy UK, we’ve received word that one of our favourite private birth centres, the world-renowned Portland Hospital for Women and Children, has launched a brand new Midwife-Led Care package…

We’re very excited about this because there are only two private centres in London that feature this option – including the famed Portland. This is a special opportunity for mothers-to-be to experience all the comforts of Midwife-Led Care in the UK’s only fully-private maternity hospital.

This means you’ll have 24 hour obstetrician and obstetric anaesthetist support should you need it, along with extensive emergency and state of the art surgical facilities on-site. In short, all bases covered for you and your baby.

The benefits of Midwife-Led Care
Most women are entirely suitable for Midwife-Led Care. Some mothers aren’t, and some women opt for obstetrician-led care for personal reasons. At Private Pregnancy UK, we consider it our job to provide useful information so you can make the right choice for you.

Why choose Midwife-Led Care?

  • Comforting, Supportive, Relaxed Care
Midwifery care has a long and proudly held reputation for being a calming option for mums.
  • Reassurance
Midwifery is considered to be one of the most highly-regulated professions in the UK, so you’ll have a rigorously trained medical professional by your side the whole time.
  • Quality of Relationship
Midwifery training is notoriously difficult to get accepted into. A key part of the screening criteria is not only academic and physiological knowledge, but interpersonal skills. Many midwives have given birth to babies themselves and understand what you are going through. They are highly caring and empathetic, just what you need on the best and most challenging day of your life.
  • A Holistic Approach
Many midwives nowadays are not only trained in conventional maternity care. Plenty are also able to offer complementary therapies that thousands of pregnant women have found to be helpful.
  • Cost-effectiveness
t is more economical to opt for Midwife-Led Care. This can be a great plus for many couples when considering all the other expenses that go hand in hand with early parenthood. With this Midwife-Led Care package, you can enjoy all the luxury and on-site medical expertise of The Portland Hospital at a lower fee.

So, what’s so special about Midwife-Led Care at The Portland Hospital?
We think Maria Cowley, who will be beginning Midwife-Led Care at The Portland Hospital next month says it best:

mother-and-baby

‘I had always thought The Portland would be a fantastic place to give birth. My elder sister had her two children there and it was just such a great experience. I saw how beautiful the surroundings were and how attentive and available the staff are, first hand. I’d always wanted a midwife-led birth plan and this option offers the reassurance of medical care’s on site, should anything unexpected happen. I’m quite nervous about labour but I know that midwives offer a relaxed, personal approach, so, when I heard The Portland were offering this package, I knew it was right for me.’

Unlike mothers who choose to give birth at home with an independent midwife, at The Portland you will have access to:

  • A dedicated team of highly-experienced, caring and committed midwives who can empower you to follow the birth plan of your choice – whether it is a waterbirth or hypnobirth for example, with or without pain relief
  • A high ratio of staff to patients, your care is paramount
  • A complete package that can begin at 12, 20 or 30 weeks
  • All necessary antenatal appointments with a midwife
  • 3 Ultrasound Scans (standard NHS amount is 2) and all routine blood tests
  • A Midwife-Led Birth
  • Midwife-Led Postnatal Care
  • 24-Hours Stay in one of The Portland’s elegant postnatal rooms including first class food and refreshments, your partner can also stay with you
  • 2 consultations with a top obstetrician to make sure everything is proceeding well. If at any point in your pregnancy or labour it becomes clear that it is not possible to continue to try for a natural delivery then that same consultant obstetrician will immediately intervene, ensuring the health of you and the safe delivery of your baby.
  • 24 hour on-call midwife advice throughout your pregnancy
  • The full spectrum of pain relief options including a 24 hour on-site epidural anaesthetist
  • A thorough check for your newborn with a Residential Paediatric Medical Officer

If you’d like to spread your good news you can enjoy exclusive Birth Announcements in The Times, first-class photography and even personal shopping services.

Am I suitable for Midwife-Led Care?
This is the key question. Most women will be absolutely fine, but certain conditions and complications can make a person ineligible for Midwife-Led Care.
