Men, Stand Up For Pregnancy!

‘Decent dude’ Ricky Barksdale gave up his seat for a visibly pregnant woman on the train, but her response was way more than he bargained for…

Ever had the feeling that chivalry might actually be dead? Yvonne Lin did. Eight months into her second pregnancy, the New Yorker had never once had a man offer up his seat for her on the jolting, crowded subway. Incensed but not without a sense of humour, she decided to make something creative so that when her knight in shining armour finally did arrive, he’d know he was appreciated. You guessed it: a specially-commissioned Incredible Hulk trophy! What?

Sharing about the encounter on her Instagram account, Yvonne explained: “I’m about 8ish months preggers (again) and I look it. I’ve been gradually coming to the conclusion that men suck. I didn’t get a single subway seat offered to me by a man throughout my first pregnancy. So for the second pregnancy, I had this made and I’ve been carrying it around everyday – till last Friday. This guy is the winner! #subway #nyc #pregnant #socialexperiment”

The trophy shows the classic superhero tearing off his shirt and is captioned: “#1 DECENT DUDE. First man to offer subway seat to pregnant woman throughout Two Pregnancies.”

Dumbfounded but happy, the decent dude posed for a snap and went on his way. Yvonne didn’t get his name but later posted the pic to social media, one thing led to another and the man was identified on Twitter as one Ricky Barksdale, US Army Veteran and father of two.

Explaining to DNAinfo, Yvonne said: “I was getting no seats from men…If I finally get a seat from a guy then I have to celebrate this some way and make sure he knows he’s appreciated…If men just gave up their seats the same amount of time or similar [as women], then it would be no problem.”

Here at Private Pregnancy UK we say: All hail the gentlemen of the world – and #StandUpforPregnancy.
