Gender Scan or Sexing Scan

A Gender Identification Scan or Sexing Scan can be conducted to determine the sex of your baby.

When is the scan performed?
A Gender Scan is usually performed after 16 weeks of pregnancy.

What will I learn from the scan?
A scan at this stage can establish the sex of your baby. The baby will also be measured and your medical professional will assess his or her wellbeing. Sexing scans are highly reliable but may be more difficult if the woman is overweight or if the baby is in an unfavourable position. Generally, if a healthcare professional is unsure about the sex of your baby they will not guess. However, it is very unusual to be unable to determine the sex of the baby.

How is the scan performed and how long does it take?
A Gender Scan will usually be performed through the tummy (a trans-abdominal scan) and it takes about 15-20 minutes.

Do I need to prepare for the scan?
There is no special preparation needed for this scan.

What do I get at the end of the scan (pictures/DVD)?
You will have a few pictures of the baby to keep.

Should I have the scan with a consultant or sonographer?
If you are experiencing a normal pregnancy, then in most cases a scan by a fully qualified, experienced sonographer is suitable. If however, you are experiencing complications with your pregnancy or need a second opinion, a scan with an obstetrics consultant is recommended.
