Ms Francis has been in independent practice for most of her midwifery career. After giving birth to her first child 28 years ago, she was inspired to move from social work into the world of midwifery. She became increasingly interested and involved in the politics surrounding childbirth and became active as a ‘consumer’ rep before finally deciding to train as a midwife when her fourth and youngest child started school in 1995.

Ms Francis is passionate about ensuring women have a choice of a positive experience of childbirth, supported by a midwife they know and trust. To do this, together with her colleagues, she has been working for a number of years to set up Neighbourhood Midwives as an employee owned social enterprise to offer exactly that.

Ms Francis feels privileged to be part of such a dynamic and exciting organisation which aspires to the highest standards of midwifery practice, providing safe and personalised care to women and ensuring every Neighbourhood Midwives midwife is well supported and enabled to be an autonomous, skilled professional.

Her aspiration is to see Neighbourhood Midwives eventually providing a service throughout the country, offering genuine continuity of care in every local community – some might even call it a 21st Century version of ‘Call the Midwife’!

She is married to the actor Peter Duncan who is an advocate for more personalised maternity care and a much greater involvement of fathers in the preparation for parenthood.
